Initially, we’ll see you following a referral from your cardiologist, whether that’s after a surgical event (like heart surgery) or the introduction of heart medications into your regimen. Our team will meet you, review the referral, evaluate you, and determine what the appropriate next steps are.
While many people think that physical therapy starts right away, there are some building blocks that we put into place first. These include education on how to manage your heart condition and implement healthy strategies; we’ll also continue to monitor you to be sure you’re healing and doing well after your initial treatment.
This stage typically lasts three to six weeks. The rehab team creates customized cardiac rehab programs for patients that include a progressive schedule of supervised physical and occupational therapy. The goal is to make sure you can return to your daily life with confidence, independence, and comfort. You can expect to learn tools to reduce your stress and anxiety during this phase as well.
Congratulations! You’ve reached what is perhaps the most exciting of the cardiac rehab phases. You’ve completed cardiac therapy and now you’re ready to go home and keep up with the new, heart-healthy habits you’ve learned throughout your program. Once you return home, you’ll maintain your diet, exercise, and other tools you learned here at Rehab Select. You can regularly check in with your rehab team and doctor to be sure that your heart is doing well.
