When to See a Wound Care Specialist

It can be difficult to know when wounds require specialized treatment or when they’ll heal on their own. In general, if your wound has not started to heal after two weeks or has not healed completely within six weeks, then you should consider visiting a wound care specialist. Certain kinds of wounds also need specialist treatment; for example, complex wounds like radiation wounds or some post-operative wounds fall into this category.

Diabetic Wound Care

People who have diabetes often come to wound care centers because they have difficulty recovering from ailments. They can develop wounds that do not heal properly or infections that require amputation of appendages. In fact, more than half of the lower leg amputations that happen are necessary because of diabetes.

What to Expect?

A wound care specialist will conduct a thorough diagnostic analysis of your wound, including the cause of the wound and any issues that might be obstructing your healing. You will be given a customized treatment plan that considers your case history, the type of wound, and your ability to comply with treatments. You will then be scheduled for a series of visits with your wound care specialists, during which your healing will be evaluated, and your treatment modified.

Wound care specialists are highly trained to treat wounds with the most up-to-date treatments and technologies. Some benefits of working with a wound care specialist include:

  • Personalized, individualized treatment plans
  • Reduced risk of serious complications or infections
  • Access to the most advanced techniques and technology
  • Emotional support throughout the healing process
  • Helpful education on how to manage your condition
