LONG-TERM CARE

COUNSELING

In the treatment of elderly patients, care of the mind is just as important as care of the body. We utilize a combination of social services, psychotherapy, problem-solving and cognitive-behavioral management therapies to help residents and their families deal with stress, depression and other psychological problems that can stem from medical issues and loss.

Our Approach to Counseling

A robust schedule of activities specifically designed to encourage socialization, and engage the resident, further enhances the quality of life for residents. Cognitive therapies are used for communication disorders caused by illnesses such as stroke. This therapy helps patients regain lost abilities in comprehension, speaking, listening, and writing. Evaluations are used to test cognitive skills and emotional adjustment. Counseling with a mental health professional is typically provided.

Benefits and Outlook

It is not uncommon for patients to need psychiatric help after an illness for depression. Counseling can help relieve patients' depression after an illness and improve recovery. Psychotherapy is also beneficial to family members who are dealing with the ramifications of caring for a loved one with chronic illness. Further, when patients are responding favorably to their treatment for depression, they are also much more likely to be compliant with rehabilitative therapies that will help them restore physical and cognitive abilities.
