Tracheostomy Care: What to Expect

At Rehab Select, we offer this service to patients from varied backgrounds, whether they have experienced a major medical event like a stroke or a critical injury. Our tracheostomy care teams are designed to provide attention to detail, regular monitoring, and effective communication between healthcare providers to ensure optimal outcomes.

Tracheostomy Assessment

Assessment & Monitoring

We know excellent care begins with a good screening process. Initially, our medical professionals will visit tracheostomy patients on-site to determine the level of care needed. At Rehab Select, we can accommodate a wide variety of trach patients, even ones new to the tracheostomy, provided they meet our parameters. Once admitted, patients can expect consistent monitoring and assessment of the tracheostomy site, respiratory status, and patient comfort. We provide an around-the-clock RN and the supervision of a respiratory therapist, and our entire nursing staff is specially trained to deal with emergency preparedness and complications, as well as routine procedures.

Active Management

We make sure that patient comfort and safety are a priority, ensuring the proper positioning of the patient and alignment of the tracheostomy tube to optimize respiratory function. Patients can expect regular suctioning at consistent intervals and excellent attention to tube maintenance and changing.

Tracheostomy Management
Therapeutic Support

Therapeutic Support

At Rehab Select, tracheostomy patients benefit from multiple therapy modalities. Some of our trach patients may have impaired speech or difficulty communicating, and our speech therapist helps guide them through adaptive communication methods. In addition, an occupational therapist can help patients gain independence with the management of their trach to safely prepare for transitioning back to a home environment. If the patient is dealing with recovery from a major health event and needs physical therapy, our facility is equipped to provide a full range of services.

Education and Transitioning

We believe continual and ongoing patient and caregiver education is key to optimal patient outcomes. You’ll receive thorough education about tracheostomy care techniques, signs of complications, emergency procedures, including when to seek medical assistance. In addition, our staff can provide guidance on specialized diets to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration while minimizing risks.
